Introducing AcrySof®Toric Intraocular Lens

New Treatment For Cataracts With Astigmatism Can Restore Crisp, Clear Vision

Lindenhurst Eye Physicians & Surgeons, leaders in advanced procedures and treatment, introduce the revolutionary AcrySof®Toric Intraocular Lenses (IOL) for people who suffer from cataracts with astigmatism.

If you’re 50 and older, cataracts and astigmatism can gradually decrease the quality of your vision until surgery is necessary. AcrySof®Toric IOLs can restore crisp, clear vision and enable you to enjoy life without glasses, sometimes even reading glasses. The doctors at Lindenhurst Eye Physicians & Surgeons trust AcrySof®Toric because of their unmatched stability and proven, long-term clinical results… and our patients agree that the improvement to their vision is dramatic and life changing.

What is an Astigmatism?
In its normal state, the cornea maintains a spherical shape like a round ball, allowing light to focus on one single point on the back of the eye. An astigmatic cornea is more of an ellipse, or egg shaped, and causes light to focus on two different points. This inability to properly focus light can results in blurred vision, eye strain, and if not treated, severe headaches for many patients. These symptoms can inhibit patients from performing everyday activities and greatly reduce their quality of life.

How Does AcrySof®Toric IOL correct Astigmatism?
Developed and manufactured by Alcon (NYSE:ACL), a worldwide leading provider of eye care, AcrySof®Toric IOLs are FDA approved, artificial lenses designed to correct astigmatism in cataract patients.

The AcrySof®Toric lens is made of a soft plastic, similar to that of a normal contact lens, which allows it to be folded and inserted through an incision that is smaller than the optic diameter of the lens itself.  Its biconvex shape (convex on both sides) is designed so that one side corrects the astigmatism and the other corrects either long or short-sightedness, depending on what your particular symptoms are. Once inserted, the lens unfolds and the haptics (supporting arms) ensure stable positioning and restored vision.

According to Dr. Richard Nattis, MD, FAAO, Medical Director of Lindenhurst Eye Physicians & Surgeons, “Most patients who have had their vision corrected with AcrySof®Toric lenses can return to all the activities they enjoyed before cataracts and astigmatism made it nearly impossible.” He also noted that most no longer need eyeglasses, and in some cases not even reading glasses. He added, “The AcrySof® Toric IOL has revolutionized the treatment of cataracts and astigmatism, and vastly improved the quality of life for many of my patients.”
