What Is Ophthalmology?
Ophthalmology is the medical subspecialty concerned with diagnosing and treating diseases of the eye. At times the ophthalmologist must combine medical and surgical skills to treat various eye conditions. A routine eye exam can uncover many of the common diseases that may affect your sight. These include glaucoma, cataract, crossed eye, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.

Your First Visit
Quality eye care begins with a thorough examination; hence your first visit will take at least 45 minutes. A complete eye exam includes:

1. Medical history - includes present medications and allergies
2. Visual Acuity Testing
3. Refraction - (please bring old glasses)
4. Glaucoma Screening
5. Cataract Evaluation
6. Examination of the external eye
7. Examination of the retina and optic nerve

Your eyes may be dilated on the first visit. The drops may blur your vision for a few hours and make you light sensitive. You will be provided with sunglasses; however, we suggest you bring a friend or relative to drive you home.
